Ok, well maybe the culprit is somewhere in there. It's quite conceivable that 
we don't handle multibyte characters correctly, yet.
I don't have much time right now, and can't look up exactly how to do it in R, 
but: Could you try setting a non-multibyte, and non-utf-8 locale, and see 
whether it works, then?
If so, we'd at least know where the problem is, and can go about fixing it.
