Sorry to bombard you with mails, but here's another thought:

You wrote, the same commands work fine, when running plain R. So try starting 
rkward like this:
# R CMD rkward
This should set the environment variables exactly like in a plain R session 
(rkward 0.3.5 will use a somewhat similar wrapping mechanism). Now try your 
commands again, and see what happens.
