Sorry for the late reply.
I don't have any brilliant suggestions.  

I'd also like to avoid having the kdevelop team make their own releases.
I think we can release kdevplatform/kdevelop:
   beta1 with 4.2.0 final
   beta2 with 4.2.1
   final with 4.2.2
if you need 2 betas, that is.  so you get an extra 2 months.

and will need to make the release notes clear.
