Having a tab replaced by an empty page, or the homepage seems like non-sense to me:

1. Why would you want to have an empty page?
2. Imho if you want your homepage to be shown, you click on the "Homepage button", which is just some pixel above the close tab button.

Something that would be cool though:

Instead of showing an empty page or your homepage when closing the last tab, it could show some kind of "introduction page", where you could see some of your bookmarks or other informations (This was also discussed in some other mail in this mailinglist)
