There is no available option right now to control placement. Your only
option would be forking the relevant code.

There has been a movement to move the applets popup logic away from
global positioning where an application has full control into
wayland's more semantic approach.  There's no reason that can't be
horizontally centre aligned to the panel, but it would require custom
hints from what we currently provide in an abstract way.
