  Indeed, in fact, what I was meaning to achieve was exactly that effect. I like centered, big shadows, that allow me to differenciate widndows with small (or non-existant) borders easily while still being smooth. The proposed compromise may seem like a good idea, but the fact that the shadow is not horizontally balanced is, although subtle, still noticed, and gives me that "something is not right" feeling that's hard to shake off.
