Hi Ivan, thank you for the suggestion.  It turns out that the following files
in .config had ownership of root, rather than the user:
    kactivitymanagerdrc 
    katemetainfos
    katepartrc
    katerc
    katevirc

I changed ownership to my user and now the errors stop.  I can't say how those
files had been set to root ownership, and I don't know if they were changed or
what their original ownership was.  And I don't know if the upgrade process was
the cause, but there definitely wasn't an issue before the upgrade.
The issue definitely wasn't the disk space or the file-system.
