I don't think it's a good idea to disable login sounds.
Sure, they have no practical use, but they are a very important part of sound 
branding ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_trademark#Sound_branding ). 
That's why e.g. Windows and OS X have startup sounds, and very distinct ones. 
And why they have them on by default.
When I'm in a room full of people who have just unpacked their laptops and are 
starting them up (yes, "normal people" actually do a full power cycle 
regularly!), I can instantly get a feeling of how many Windows PCs and Macs 
are in the room (people don't even care to turn off the sound when they start 
their computer up in the middle of a presentation!). And I always keep my ears 
open for that familiar Plasma startup sound. Of course I never hear it outside 
of KDE meetings, but if I did, I'd immediately go over to the source of that 
sound and start a conversation with a fellow Plasma user.
So imagine a room with 30 Plasma users and five Windows users starting up their 
machines, but you'd only hear the Windows tune. That would give the wrong 
impression! The startup sound is the most prominent sign of life of an 
operating system / desktop environment (since many more people can hear a 
computer in a room than look at its screen), so why do we miss out on being 
identified?

Maybe the promo people have something to say about this?
