if it is in the kmix repo, then it doesn't matter that kde-workspace is frozen. it would be pretty trivial to add a check in the systemtray to see if the kmix applet exists on the system and if it does then show it (and for kmix to drop its system tray icon in that particular case ..)

this reminds me of the "applet replaces systray icon" feature we have discussed in the past so that the application does not need to worry about this. sth for PW2, perhaps: an optional entry in the .desktop file that says "this applet replaces that systray icon", e.g.
