krunner has learned from your past selections -> you selected "start new 
instance" when you type "dolphin" (or whatever) more than you selected the 
running window so it prioritizes the new instance opiton for you.

yes, krunner *learns*.

(90%+ of what people complain about or think is missing is usually due to not 
knowing how it currently works ... :)

now, in this case it does not work as well as it could/should because learning 
is not weighted. all actions are equally important to the learning and there 
is no examination of choice within context (of returned matches).

so if you launch dolphin a lot through alt+f2 it can happen that you 
accidentally teach krunner to favour that action over selecting the already 
active instance.

a more sophisticated learning algorithm could address these kinds of issues.
