there is going to be no "right answer" because no matter what the choice is 
someone will differ. if we have both ways? "it's cluttered and hard to use". 
have one way? "the other way is better". yes, it will be different people 
objecting, but it's stile someone. and i'm going to assume you don't believe 
you are more valuable and important than others here. ;)

so here are our options:

* create a better view which does not replicate the problems of cascading 
menus or any of the other things the current view does improve on

* live with it

in either case, trying to peruade people with words is not useful in this 
particular situation because it is not words that are needed.
