problem in logging out

this is usually due to kdm not being set up properly (which can be 
increasingly annoying to do given things like ConsoleKit ...) .. essentially, 
it needs root access (via suid or via ConsoleKit integration) and the default 
install may not have been set up automatically on vanilla install.

that should at least point you in the right direction.
