i came to my senses and just decided to employ modeltest on the existing model 
implementation which is featureful and otherwise well tested. it is now 
working rather well. i'd invite people to test.

if you build with debugfull then you'll also get modeltest built into plasmate 
and any errors in the model will trigger an assert and present a very helpful 
backtrace.
