which is what it does.

no, because Apple has an utterly different strategy for their status icons. if
we did something similarly utterly different with our panel as well as the
system tray we could decide to also always show it ... but then ...

people complain about not being able to hide it on macs (just do a google
search for "macos battery icon hide") .. and:

"apple does it" is not a synonym for "great". if you think otherwise, i'm
happy to share my dozen or three stories of "stupid shit macs do on a regular
basis" that i've collected in the last 4 months of living in switzerland with
someone who has to use one for work every day.

because phones, which are not laptops/desktops (to state the obvious) are
rarely plugged in (relative to their running time), usually unplugged either
before being fully charged or shortly thereafter and rarely watched in a
meaningful way when being charged.

because phones, which are designed by people largely stuck in the last century
except where they have been pulled by their nosehairs closer to 2011 by
competition and necessity, have highly uninteresting and inflexible primary
UIs.

in this case, the comparison of a decision driven by non-phones with phones
doesn't seem highly relevant.

indeed. can you share the specifics of what you think the reasons are and how
that relates to our decision to show it only when it has something useful to
say?
