Another idea to discuss (maybe a bit controversial ;-)), it's about  
managing applets location and their size in panels a bit more similar to  
that from KDE3 times (but more modern).
In detail (prerequisite: opened panel configuration dialog):
- show resize / move handles similar to these of spacer (when it is set to  
flexible mode) when hovering particular applet (maybe only when hovering  
near it's edge?)
- dragging left (top) handle would be used mainly for setting location  
(adjusting size of spacer) and maybe also size of preceding applet (if  
it's constraints allows), depending on move direction
- dragging right (bottom) handle would be used to resize applet (if  
possible) and maybe sometimes move it
- automatically add information about empty space between applets or more  
precisely, position of left or top edge (for horizontal panels) of applets  
(no need for manual inserting of spacers)

Saving location instead of spacer width should have advantage in case of  
having more than one applet with variable size on one panel.

Is this easily achievable with currently available layout classes (at  
least partially, excluding saving spacer location instead of width)?
