important issues to address for 4.8.0

below is a small list of bugs that i would really like to see us concentrate 
on clearing up for the 4.8.0 release. if you are aware of other major issues, 
please add them to this thread, but keep them to major issues: common crashes, 
bad regressions in usability, etc.
