enums in dataengines

so... I'm about to update the activity engine on RB to the new activity API. 
which includes an enum, State, with 5 possible values.

how should I represent this in the dataengine - an integer? a string? 
and how should it be treated by the consumer?
the enum itself is in KActivityInfo, and a few other places...
