It's not just an Amarok issue. 'Unimportant' information shouldn't be stored.
What is important and what is not, should be up to the end-users, since developers do not know what every single person thinks is important information or not.
I only like to see the popup information stored regarding things that are critical and things that need me to do something (ie. my battery needs to be replaced (which KDE 4.6 keeps complaining about for some reason), or something I am running needs to be configured).
Current songs playing, a new IM, etc. are all time-sensitive. It is relevant for a few seconds, then it is out of date. Which means these messages should not last for more than a few seconds and then disappear to oblivion. While, others (ie. desktop effects have been disabled!) should be stored, so users have a small history of what has happened since login.
