or you could use a KTempFile ...

looking at 
kdebase/runtime/kcontrol/componentchooser/componentchooserbrowser.cpp it's 
apparently in kdeglobals' [General] group as BrowserApplication=

looking at krun.cpp there doesn't seem to be any convenience API for that.
