when Interface::queryTextEdited is called, we know that whatever we currently 
have showing may not match anymore .. the problem isn't the "doesn't match, 
but we don't know it yet" scenario (easy enough to just say "the text has 
changed"), but the "does match still, we just don't know it yet" is the 
problematic one (type su, suspects.txt appears in the matches, autocomplete 
suggests suspend, type 'p' then tab ... suspects.txt should remain, and no 
autocomplete accepted)

without some way of asking a match if it "still matches" i don't see a way 
around that, either and you're probably right that tab completion will have to 
just die.
