Beginners question regarding the batter-stuff

Hi,

if I wanted to try to invent some statistical mechanism to predict the future 
of the battery runtime. and if I wanted to try my ideay in an independant 
(python-)applet first, where would I have to look for the current battery 
status in the plasma-way?
Is it an engine I would have to connect to?
