this is my favourite (from both the coding and visual aesthetic angles), but i 
wanted to see what you thought of it.

drilling down a bit further:

* how many positions should there be (possible answers: infinite, many, few)

* if non-infinite, where should those positions be defined (in the theme,  
randomly generated on start up by the plasma instance, ...?)
