not without user intervention; which means more configuration UI to wade
through .. is there really a serious use case for this?

we already map the screen # and screen size.
unless there's a common use case where massive rearrangement of the monitors
is a commonplace action, i don't see the need to change the current code or
make it more complex than it already is.
