Getting Effect Name and Description

Hi, I'm using Phonon on Mac for audio unit testing, and am having difficulty accessing the Name and Description of units built locally. that is the call to   

Phonon::BackendCapabilities::availableAudioEffects()

returns the effects, but non-Apple effects are showing up with <unknown effect> for the name and description. 

the apple supplied audio unit validator "auval" command line tool retrieves the units name as expected. 

Can someone tell me where in the .component package this data should be specified? or where the phonon backend is expecting to find this data?
