This is implemented since long ago.  Except that the other practice modes don't
open a separate window any more.

Regarding the background, I recommend going to "Settings -> Configure
Parley...", then the "Theme" dialog and click the "Get new themes" button. 
There are some really nice and quiet backgrounds there that would be less
distracting for you.
