Well, I think I understand where you guys want to reach. Making it a containment (like the desktop containment) will give the possibility of adding a Folder View as an activity, for instance (once it is implemented). It is a very nice and new approach.

... And a containment has almost all the advantages of any plasmoid (it can't rotate now, but who's going to rotate a Folder View?), so you can have multi-folder's view because you can add more than one containment in the desktop.

I thought of this wishlist as a way to make people complain less (they will complain of having this folder view's background since they are used to the old way of seeing icons on the Desktop), but I understand this approach, let's see if others will.
