making it transparent is the wrong approach. it would make it rather confusing as to why you couldn't click on items beneath the applet; you wouldn't have a clear indication of where you could start rubber banding; etc..

the real solution is a combination of:

* proper artwork (glassified is an awesome theme in this respect)

* finishing off making the folderview a containment so that the purists can go back to kde3 style
