[Changing subject to avoid hijacking the "Themes and Panels" thread]

This would be excellent and on the subject of 4 individual panels,
one thing I miss from kde3 is the instant auto-dissapearing kicker
so I'd like to look into re-implementing something similar, especially
if anyone can offer a few suggestions as to where to dive in for a
novice.

I'd like to create something like an invisible 1px wide active area
surrounding the dashboard where a (configurable) RMB click against any
side would pop out the panel for that particular top, bottom or side.

The dissapearing kicker gave me maximum screen real estate and the
ability to have an extra large kicker with lots of goodies. Kind of
best of both worlds. The one annoying drawback was when moving the
mouse around the bottom of apps would sometimes pop up the kicker
when not wanted, especially while using konsoles tabs along the
bottom. I figure banging the mouse pointer against any edge with a
RMB click then a LMB click on whatever item on a panel would be the
fastest way to interact with up to 4 panels, that are normally not
visible at all. The same action in a corner could perhaps bring up
something to configure this interaction. The ability to have 4
individual panels for EACH desktop would be.. dare I say.. awesome.

I'm not sure if other people would like this but I most certainly
would and am prepared to spend time on it but I just need, or would
like, a few pointers where to start?
