thoughts in random order:

* this would make a nice SoC project

* the proposal doesn't say much about the interaction goals, such as being 
able to detach and place them on a desktop or panel

* it might be nice to enumerate some of the API requirements without actually 
going into too much design work up front. a listing of what it needs to be 
able to provide would probably be enough (adding, removing, moving, etc)
