could be a case of bad $HOME/.kde and $HOME/.kde4 folders. Try to remove them, reboot and then try to get the crash happening. 
Perhaps you installed kde 4 over kde 3.5.x config files ?
I´m unable to get the crash in KDE 4.0.2 myself.
