without reading the whole thread my 2cents:

please make that toolbox thing in the top right corner optional only, it is visually very distracting and gets in the way when trying to to window management besides it doesn't seem to have any useful function anyway, everything it does is/can be covered by a simple right click. 

For the zoom function I suggest right click mouse wheel or for keyboard users ctrl or alt or "windows key" + arrow keys and then have it zoom from the mouse position (compiz zoom plugin style...)
