this fixes the issue with pixmaps being creatd and not deleted properly ad 
nauseum. *however* ... it also shows up a flaw in the animation code: when you 
hover an item it flickers to black before fading it... the alpha is obviously a 
bit too much at that point; there needs to be some adjustment work on getting 
it to be smooooth in and out.

i'm too tired to work any more today, but if there's anyone out there who'd 
like to give it a shot, go ahead =)
