we really don't want to encourage "more options" in the clocks. that's one 
reason we *separated* the clock faces in the first place. =)

i'm dubious of this approach to measuring usability. =) the real way to get 
answers is to Coffee House[1] it and test both layouts on users. ask them to 
do various tasks, time them and ask them for their impression afterwards. not 
just visual impressions, but after they have used it. get some to use one 
layout first, then the other; reverse order for another group.

i'd be happy to Coffee House it between now and thursday, even. i'll whip up 
the groupbox version later today and post it so that others can join me in 
data gathering should they so wish.

[1] this is what i refer to as the "common open sourcer's version of a 
usability lab" ;)
