Because I don't want to depend on GMail settings whatsoever. Retreiving 
unread messages number and subject in GMail is a matter of a simple HTML 
query, why should I use useless (in this case) POP3/IMAP calls?

Personally, I don't user nor IMAP neither POP access on GMail, and I 
don't feel the need to.
