yeah, that patch looks familiar: i had to do the same thing in kde3's system tray ;)

the application sets the size of the item even though it has absolutely NO WAY of knowing where it will appear. 

one more reason the current system tray if friggin' brain damaged. no, that's not kind to the brain damaged, because the system tray is far, far, far more annoying and stupid....
