What looks odd about it?

I agree the buttons can be hard to read, but it's not due to the 
gradient changes, but due to the fact text is overlapping the plasma 
icon (white on yellow). Aaron said before he was against text 
overlapping the icon for this reason. If anything the switch from white 
to plasma's black/gray should increase contrast against white text 
making things easier to read.
