Did something happen to layouts?

well, the fact that this worked at all before is somewhat coincidental. 
changes exposed problems which were lurking just under the surface (e.g. no 
way to define and respect margins in non-Layout LayoutItems, painting from 
0,0 "magically" (by which i mean "fragily") working on applets ..)
