what i think is happening is that the outer pixel, which could well be a 
rounding error or the "line is in between pixels" drawing of Qt, gets 
inflated along with the rest of the element, resulting in a large void that 
doesn't exist visually in the original. so this may be a mathematical 
artifact, conflicting with visual expectations. =/
