Have a look at bug 155974, which I opened a few weeks ago.
If you look at the changeset that closed it you will find this line:
"const qreal ratio = 2.25; //maybe this should not be hardcoded"

I already played a bit with it, works pretty well. A setting of 10 at standard panel size will give you two rows of tasks after more than 2 tasks are open.

So it shouldn't be too hard to get what bug 77407 asks for.
