unfortunately, the first step is now going to ensure that i spend a bunch of 
time fixing various things.

right now i'm tempted to just rip it out, though that is made *much* harder 
because it was done with a series of unreviewed commits making it a bunch of 
revisions in svn versus just one or two that would be easier to pick out. so 
instead, i'll go through and fix things to the point that it's workable and 
then start working on doing what it should've been in the first place.

really, this way of "working" sucks. i really respect your efforts. let's just 
try and work together as a team rather than lone gunmen playing out some wild 
west fantasy.
