hm.. which server is it trying to find, and why would the 2nd try work better 
than the first in this case?

in any case, this seems to work sometimes ... right now it seems to not be 
checking over and over anymore, which is nice ;) if/when i can get it to 
replicate the constant-checking misbehaviour i'll see if i can track down 
what's doing it.
