as Rafael pointed out, you want to use the hotplug engine for this rather than 
the device engine.

SolidDevice (what a horrible name. it should just be devices) is more for 
querying information on random devices (a general purpose engine) while 
hotplug is about things coming and going and is much more task oriented.

if anything we need a greater number of task oriented hardware engines so that 
SolidDevice becomes more and more of a fallback mechanism for when there 
isn't a purpose-built engine.

this also speaks to the need for engines to provide better runtime 
documentation, just as we need with runners.
