well, yes. i just added debug output, not a fix. so, now we know the culprit 
is, at least, not plasma:

plasma(10357) Plasma::Corona::loadDefaultSetup: number of screens is 1
plasma(10357) Plasma::Corona::loadDefaultSetup:      screen  0 geometry is 
QRect(0,0 1280x1024)

which means it's either the new nvidia driver screwing up and lying 
innapropriately or QDesktopWidget screwing up and not poking X the right way. 
let's see (, he says, opening qdesktopwidget_x11.cpp)
