hm.. see, the odd thing is that when i replace the svg element painting with a 
solid colour using fillRect it works perfectly. it's something with svg 
rendering. and this hack breaks with transparent backgrounds.

so ... perhaps we can paint it first and 2px bigger in each direction? it's 
still a bad hack that will result in artifacts in certain situations, but 
this is good enough for beta3 in any case.. pls commit.
