that'd be cool; to make sure we aren't just wasting memory for no reason, it 
would be good to do some simple benchmarking and see how long it takes to 
draw the background manually ever time vs cached ... then we have some #s as 
to the savings... it'll be faster, the question is how much.

probably not, but it's an easy thing to change once caching is there.
