why are the translate calls needed? is the painter that is passed in not 
already properly set up? all coordinates are supposed to be in local (to the 
qgraphicsitem) coordinates ....

this sort of implies that every applet/widget would have to make such a 
translate call if it can't be solved elsewise (which i'm thinking it 
can...). -if- it can't, it would probably be better to call this in 
Applet::paint before paintInterface is called to avoid having to do this 
everywhere...

but first, yeah, i'd be very interested in seeing why this call is needed in 
the first place.
