it seems my patch was just over the size limit when I posted it yesterday. 
doh. let's try checking the 'compress' option.

this started out as an attempt to fix a little bug I'd caused, and turned into 
a huge refactor of the twitter data engine. it's still not entirely done, as 
you can see from the comments, but it's reached the point where it works at 
least as well as the original code - and probably is capable of doing 
multiple accounts too. now I can make a different twitter account to spam 
when I'm doing tests ;).
