In current subversion, right clicking widgets and closing from the submenu works. Dragging widgets from the add-widgets dialog to the panel (including the unused area of the tasks applet) also works.

The only major issue is that widgets appear at the end regardless of where you added them and don't always come back in the same order on the next login.
