"funny icon sizes" .. "depending on text length" .. =) unfortunately i'm 
getting ready to leave for florida atm so can't test patches with the usual 
apply-run method. if you could be a bit more specific that'd be great. or, if 
your patch is actually working, commit it.

btw, i'm really not happy about having half-assed text shadows. either we need 
nice text halos or else just a rounded block of semi-opaque colour behind the 
text. yes, that makes it look a bit "selected" but at least it will look 
decent.
