can you spot the problem with the following?

    VGA connected 1280x1024+0+0
    LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0

yep, the driver is saying that both monitors are positioned at (0,0). obviously LVDS should be 1024x768+1280+0 or VGA should be 1280x1024+768+0.

plasma is being lied to by the driver. not much i can do about that, to be honest.

let me guess, you are using an intel chipset with the open source intel driver, right? =)
